About:

Dr. Tom Oh is a Professor in the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences (GCCIS) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) since 2008.  His research focus has been Vehicular Area Networks, Mobile Device Security, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Internet of Things (IoT) Security, Sensor Networks, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Assistive Technology (Smart Cane).   He has over 18 years of experience in networking and telecommunication as an engineer and researcher for several telecom and defense companies. Dr. Oh received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1991 and received MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering (Computer Networks) from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in 1995 and 2001, respectively, while working for telecommunication and defense companies.

Before he joining RIT, he was a Principal Systems Engineer at Rockwell Collins where he was leading the advanced architecture development of mobile ad-hoc networks for military applications. Additionally, he led/supported OPNET modeling and simulation team for secret projects and actively pursued funding from DARPA, Air Force Research Lab, and Army Research Lab. Before Rockwell, he worked for Ceterus Networks, Ericsson, Nortel Networks and Raytheon. He has published numerous technical articles and holds several patents and awards from Nortel, Ericsson, and Raytheon.

While at RIT, he has been focusing on his IoT and security related research and received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Safe and Secure Mobile, Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute(ETRI), Department of Defense(DoD), Rochester General Hospital(RGH), Association of Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI), and American Packaging Corporation (APC).  He has published over 17 international well-known journals, 5 book chapters, 8 IETF standard drafts, over 97 peer-reviewed conference papers, and over 70 invited posters and TV media.  Lastly, he has received numerous awards and honors such as 2021 KIAT Appreciation Award; 2021 IEEE Communication Magazine Award; 2021 Sungkyunkwan University Award; 2020 KAUPA Appreciation Award; 2019 KIAT Award; 2018 Sponsor Innovation Award, Imagine RIT; 2016, Winner of Imagine RIT Destler’s Contest; 2012, ASIA-Best Tech Paper Award; 2011 OPNETWORK Best Tech Paper Award; 2009, GCCIS Award; 2008, AT&T Distinguished Korean Service Award.
